Should have known better?

Today in sacrament meeting someone quoted the Savior when he was on the cross, saying, "Father, Forgive them, for they know not what they do."

It struck me that that applies to us as well. When we are young and dumb, we make lots of mistakes in our decision making processes, in our relationships, in our responsibilities. I have often felt, Ugh... how could I have been so blind (or proud, or stubborn, etc). It has been hard for me to forgive myself. We often say to people who make mistakes (especially young people), "you should have known better." I seem to think I should have known then what I have learned since then. Maybe that is the instinct about the principle of "from all eternity to all eternity."

I'm grateful the Savior didn't say, "Father,... they should have known better, so you can do with them what you want with them."
